Substance Abuse
Substance disorders in DSM-5 include 9 classes of drugs:
- Alcohol
- Caffeine
- Cannabis
- Hallucinogens
- Inhalants
- Opioids
- Sedatives, hypnotics, and anxiolytics
- Stimulants (cocaine)
- Tobacco
Symptoms:
Substance-related problems include:
- Persistent unsuccessful attempts to decrease use
- A great deal of time is spent obtaining the substance or
recovering from its effects
- Craving
- Failure to fulfil major role obligations at work, school, or home
- Persistent interpersonal problems caused by the substance
Treatment:
Treatment for substance abuse requires specialists with
training and experience in this area.
Substance abuse problems are notoriously difficult to treat
because individuals like the way the substances make them feel and they hide
their usage from others. Specialists
will have experience of how to talk with users about these challenges. Specialists also know about proper protocols
for detoxification, how to handle relapses, and how to find the best long-term
supports.
